About Barcodes

Barcodes encode data in parallel lines of varying widths and spacings. Different barcode formats serve different industries: CODE128 is the most versatile, encoding any ASCII character and used in shipping/logistics. EAN-13 (and its US equivalent UPC-A) is the 13-digit barcode on retail products worldwide. EAN-8 is a shorter version for small items. Code 39 (also called 3-of-9) is common in industrial and automotive applications. The last digit of EAN/UPC barcodes is a check digit calculated from the preceding digits.
